On Wednesday 28th February 2024, our Chief Finance Officer Sam Jackson and a group of Apogee employees headed to Holborough Marshes in Kent to celebrate World Wildlife Day with a hands-on approach!
Based just 15 minutes up the road from Apogee HQ in Maidstone, Holborough Marshes is a nature reserve under the care of Kent Wildlife Trust – the county’s leading conservation charity.
The day began with a briefing from Rosemary, the Kent Wildlife Trust representative and leader for the day, to help the team better understand the importance of the work and the benefit to local wildlife and conservation.
As the team learned, marshland is an essential habitat for ground-nesting birds. However, the scrub overgrowth (including Hawthorn bushes and small trees) is often rife with predators, such as foxes and badgers. It’s important to regularly clear back the scrub to make the environment more appealing for waders and ground-nesting birds.
Armed with loppers and bowsaws, Team Apogee got stuck in and worked hard to cut back the overgrowth!
Our day with Kent Wildlife Trust was amazing – it was such rewarding work! It was brilliant to see people from different teams coming together to make a real difference.
Volunteering days such as this are a great way for us to give back to our local communities and to do our bit for the environment.”
– Sam Jackson, Chief Finance Officer
While the team worked hard to clear the bushes and trees, Rosemary set about building a bonfire to safely dispose of the cuttings.
The team were also visited by some friendly ponies, local residents of Holborough Marshes!
After a well-deserved break and lunch by the bonfire, the team rallied for a final push - carrying numerous cuttings and branches across the field to add to the bonfire.
The day was very rewarding, and certainly made a change to a day in the office! It was also a brilliant opportunity for members of different teams to get to know each other while making a difference to the preservation of local wildlife.
