Apogee Corporation heads to Botany Bay for World Earth Day

Apogee's Chief Finance Officer led employees for a day of removing litter from the coastline of Botany Bay in Kent.

"The Apogee team and I were delighted to spend a day at Botany Bay in support of World Earth Day this April. This important awareness day is all about supporting and protecting the environment in any way we can – and removing litter from our coastlines is a fantastic way to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable world.

“Our day was run in partnership with Friends of Botany Bay – a registered Community Interest Company that carries out vital work in the local area to help keep this popular beach clean. The group organises regular volunteering activities to clear litter from the coastline and surrounding areas.

“The day began with a safety briefing from Friends of Botany Bay, ensuring that we were all fully equipped and ready for our day on the beach. After the briefing, we split into groups of three and set off with our litter pickers and bags.

“The environment at Botany Bay is incredibly varied, making for an interesting day – from the sandy beach and white cliffs to the grassy pedestrian areas and nearby roads, there was certainly plenty of ground to cover!

“The team worked exceptionally hard to collect all types of litter, including plastic bags, cans, bottles, packaging, polystyrene, and much more. Litter such as this can be extremely damaging to marine and local wildlife, so I’m really proud that we were able to make a meaningful difference at Botany Bay.

According to the Marine Conservation Society, over 16,800kg of litter was removed from beaches across the UK and Channel Islands in 2024. This staggering amount of waste is a stark reminder of the urgent need for all of us to do our bit to protect the environment and marine wildlife.

“I would strongly encourage everyone to take part in a beach clean or litter pick if they can – it’s astonishing how much waste there is when you really stop and look. Plus, volunteering is a fantastic way to spend time away from the desk and can have great benefits for your wellbeing and sense of teamwork.

“A huge thank you to Friends of Botany Bay for hosting our World Earth Day beach clean – I’m already looking forward to more days like this!”
